Bramley Village Invests in Professional-Grade Speed Management Technology
Overview
Bramley, a large village in Hampshire has strengthened its Community Speedwatch programme by investing in professional-grade speed management technology. Earlier this year, the village secured funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire, Donna Jones, enabling the purchase of two TruSign 300CR Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) and a ProLaser 4 laser speed gun.
This investment has allowed Bramley to adopt a more data-led, flexible and targeted approach to tackling speeding concerns and improving road safety across the community.
The Challenge: Increasing Speeds and Community Concern
Over time, Bramley Speedwatch and local residents became increasingly concerned about rising vehicle speeds through the village. The primary issue centred on the main through route—a 30mph zone extending for more than three miles. With only one SID in each direction, the village lacked sufficient coverage to fully understand where speeding was occurring or to provide consistent visual reminders to drivers.
There was also a growing need for reliable data to share with residents, the Parish Council, and the Borough Council, both to demonstrate the scale of the issue and to justify further investment.
A Data-Led Case for Investment
Existing SID data proved critical in securing funding through the PCC Anti-Social Behaviour Fund. The data clearly demonstrated speeding issues and helped justify the need for additional equipment. Without this evidence, securing funding would have been far more challenging. Sharing this data has also strengthened engagement with residents. SID reports are shared directly with concerned residents, provided to the Parish Council, and published in the village’s monthly magazine. In some cases, the data has helped manage perceptions, showing that reported speeding concerns were less severe than expected.
The Solution: Enhanced Speed Management Capability
TruSign 300CR Speed Indicator Devices
Bramley installed two additional TruSign 300CR SIDs, bringing the total to four. These solar-powered units can be easily redeployed, allowing the Speedwatch team to respond quickly to concerns in different parts of the village.
Key benefits include:
- Remote access to data and settings via an integrated modem and SIM
- No requirement for roadside data retrieval
- Configurable display messages to encourage driver compliance
- Full compatibility with existing Truvelo SIDs
- Reduced running costs through solar charging
The additional SIDs have enabled monitoring beyond the main route, including roads near schools, playgroups, pedestrian crossing points, and other sensitive locations.
ProLaser 4 Laser Speed Gun
Previously, Bramley Speedwatch used a radar speed gun with a wide field of view, making it difficult to target individual vehicles when traffic was present. The upgrade to the ProLaser 4 has significantly improved roadside operations.
As a Home Office Type Approved device used by police road-policing units, the ProLaser 4offers accurate, long-range speed detection and the ability to target specific vehicles even when multiple vehicles are in view. This has improved confidence in the data collected and enhanced the effectiveness of Speedwatch deployments.
Goals and Early Results
Bramley Speedwatch’s goals are to reduce speeding, educate drivers, respond to community concerns, and provide reliable data to Police, residents and local councils.Success is being measured using data from theSIDs, a fixed speed camera, and routine roadside checks with the ProLaser 4. While still early, there are already positive indicators showing an overall reduction in speeding across the village.
Conclusion
By investing in professional-grade speed management technology, Bramley has equipped its Community Speedwatch team with reliable tools and high-quality data. The combination of TruSign 300CR SIDs and the ProLaser 4 has enabled a smarter, more responsive, and more credible approach to road safety—demonstrating how evidence led investment can deliver meaningful improvements for local communities.
