Case Study: Improving Site Safety and Flow: Newsprinters Deploys Speed Management Solution

Overview

Newsprinters Holdings Ltd plays a criticalrole in the UK’s newspaper supply chain, manufacturing, logistics and associated servicesfor some of the nation’s best-known titles. Each week, the business prints and deliversmore than 20 million copies of newspapersincluding The Telegraph, The Mail, The Sun, The iand The Metro, operating under strict deadlineswhere reliability, safety and efficiency areessential.

At its Broxbourne site, Newsprinters manages a high-throughput logistics operation with approximately 200 vehicles visiting every night. Activity peaks between 8pm and 2am as HGVs, vans and cars arrive to collect newspapers for onward distribution to wholesalers, retailers and direct customers across the UK. With multiple HGV loading bays and hundreds of vehicle movements concentrated into a limited time window, controlling vehicle movement safely and consistently is a constant operational priority.

The Challenge

The pressure of fixed arrival and departure times can influence driver behaviour, even when sufficient time is allocated for routes and loading. On a busy logistics site operating through the night, this creates a heightened need to manage vehicle speeds, ensure compliance with site rules, and maintain safe separation between vehicles and personnel.

Speed control was particularly important given the mix of vehicle types, the involvement of multiple contract operators, and the early morning operating hours. While Newsprinters already had strong safety processes in place, the business wanted to continue monitoring compliance around speed, PPE use and hazard lights.

Objectives

When reviewing speed management options,Newsprinters’ key objective was to supportcompliance through visibility and data, with theoption for enforcement if required. The solution needed to work day-to-day without disrupting operations, reinforce site rules consistently, and provide management with reliable insight into vehicle behaviour. Importantly, it also needed to support engagement with driver companies, ensuring responsibility for compliance sat with those managing the drivers themselves.

The Solution

To meet these requirements, Newsprinters selected Truvelo UK’s TruSign solar-powered speed indicator displays, installing two units at key locations across the site. Displaying vehicle speeds in real time, the TruSign units remind drivers of the 10mph site speed limit as they approach higher-risk areas, helping to influence behaviour before issues arise.

The solar-powered design offered flexibility, low maintenance and straightforward deployment, while integration alongside existing site CCTV added further value. In addition, Newsprinters invested in a Truvelo ProLaser 4 handheld speed gun, initially in response to a specific incident and subsequently as a deterrent and enforcement tool. Capable of pin pointing individual vehicles at range with police-grade accuracy, the ProLaser 4 allows precise spot speed checks anywhere on site and can be deployed across other UK locations if required.

Looking Ahead

Newsprinters may consider rolling out similar solutions across its other UK sites. As part of its wider logistics safety strategy, Truvelo’s speed management technology delivers reliable data to support informed decisions. The company would recommend the solution to other operators, noting that real results come from combining technology with on-the-ground engagement, not enforcement alone.
